Preactive IT Solutions 2 of 5 checks
Managed IT for engineering and construction firms, with offices in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Beaumont.
Preactive IT Solutions Overview
Preactive IT Solutions is a managed IT provider based in Houston that says it has operated since 2003. Its site names Charles Swihart as founder and CEO and calls the company family-owned. It lists offices in Houston, Austin, Beaumont and San Antonio.
The company aims at a narrow market. Its home page addresses Texas construction and engineering firms "With 50 to 500 Computers", including MEP firms, general contractors and subcontractors. Other pages address manufacturers in Houston and South Texas.
What Preactive IT Solutions sells
The site lists managed IT with 24/7 monitoring, help desk support, onsite dispatch, cybersecurity, business continuity, cloud services and VoIP. A co-managed option comes in three forms: shared responsibility with in-house IT staff, project-based work, and a supplementary model that takes specific tasks off an internal team.
What sets the pitch apart is industry software. The site says its team supports Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Procore, SolidWorks, Deltek and Microvellum, among others. It describes a security package for builders called the "BuildSafe IT Blueprint", aimed at email compromise and invoice fraud.
Security pages describe managed EDR, Microsoft 365 hardening and help with Texas's SB 2610. Manufacturing pages cover OT network management, MES and ERP infrastructure, and support for robotics and CNC environments.
The work it points to
The clients page carries testimonials from Rice & Gardner Consultants, EBE Electrical/Mechanical Consulting Engineers, Durwood Greene Construction Co. and Quest Design & Fabrication, which says it has used the company since 2006. The site also claims 100+ 5-star Google reviews.
It cites a 2024 MSP Titans award for construction and engineering and a Houston Business Journal 2024 Best Places to Work finalist listing. We have not spoken to any of those clients.
How it says it charges
It publishes no prices. The cloud page promises transparent billing and detailed reports on cloud spend, without figures. The VoIP page says clients save 25% or more on voice services. Every route on the site leads to a free consultation.
What its site does not tell you
On the 12 pages we read, the site gives no prices and no contract terms. It mentions a target of sub-1-hour response times but no committed service level. It describes itself as a 25-person company, and says its technicians earn a Microsoft 365 certification.
It also says it is the only MSP in Texas to specialize in construction and engineering firms, a claim we have no way to check. None of that is unusual for a small provider's website, and all of it is worth asking about before you sign.

Preactive IT Solutions Services
What those services mean, and what to ask
Ongoing responsibility for your systems for a recurring fee: monitoring, patching, support and planning. Ask exactly which devices, users and sites the fee covers, and what is billed on top.
What an MSP isThe provider works alongside your own IT staff, taking the monitoring, tooling, out-of-hours cover or projects they have no time for. It depends on a written line between what each team owns.
IT outsourcing modelsProtection, detection and response: endpoint software, email filtering, firewalls and someone watching the alerts. Many providers resell a specialist for monitoring, so ask who actually does the work and who calls you at night.
Cybersecurity basicsLicensing, administration, security settings and migration for cloud platforms. The platform keeps the service running; backing up your data in it and securing the accounts is still somebody's job, so ask whose.
Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365The number your staff call. Ask for the hours, the response time by priority, whether the people answering are the provider's own staff, and what an on-site visit costs.

Rules that come with those sectors
Naming a sector is not evidence that a provider meets its rules. These are the ones that commonly apply in the United States, and what to ask about each.
- Manufacturing
- Manufacturers in the defense supply chain are assessed under CMMC. If that is you, ask whether the provider has taken a client through it.
