Braintek 2 of 5 checks
Managed and co-managed IT, security and Microsoft 365 for businesses north of Houston.
Braintek Overview
Braintek is a managed IT and cybersecurity provider based in Spring, in the Houston metro, with a second office in Fort Worth. Its site says founder Greg Brainerd launched it full-time in 2002 with his wife, Tracy, after he was laid off from Pennzoil. It says it serves small and mid-sized businesses, typically 10 to 200 employees.
The site lists the sectors it works in, among them CPAs and financial firms, healthcare, manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, law firms and nonprofits.
What Braintek sells
The core offer is fully managed IT for a flat monthly fee: monitoring, help desk, security, backup and IT strategy. The site says security tools and awareness training are part of the managed service rather than add-ons. It also sells co-managed IT.
Around that it lists Microsoft 365 and Azure work, private cloud hosting of client servers, network support with cabling and Wi-Fi, risk assessments and business VoIP. On phones it says it typically recommends Ooma and does not resell it.
Less usual for this directory, it offers AI enablement, business automation and custom development of tools, dashboards and apps. The site also says it keeps a group of its own employees outside the Gulf Coast so support continues during a hurricane or hard freeze.
The work it points to
The site cites a 4.9 rating from 367 Google reviews. Its home page quotes clients at American Income Life, Dawson Security Group and KK Corp. The about page claims hundreds of clients and over $3.6 million in annual revenue. We have not spoken to any of those clients.
How it says it charges
Braintek publishes a price range, which is rare. Its pricing page gives $150 to $250 per device per month plus $15 to $35 per Microsoft 365 mailbox, with Microsoft licensing billed separately.
It states that it offers one-year and three-year agreements and generally recommends three. New agreements carry a 90-day start in which a client can cancel with no fees or penalties. Its guarantee says that if a client is dissatisfied it will make it right at no charge or refund that month of service.
What its site does not tell you
On the 12 pages we read, little of the usual list is missing. The site says nearly 20 people work there, names CompTIA and Cisco CCNA certifications, and gives help desk hours of Monday through Friday with after-hours support for urgent issues.
Its response figure, about 10 minutes to reach a live technician, is described as typical rather than as a contractual commitment. The service attachments that form its agreement are linked from a legal page we did not read. Both are worth asking about before you sign.

Braintek Services
What those services mean, and what to ask
Ongoing responsibility for your systems for a recurring fee: monitoring, patching, support and planning. Ask exactly which devices, users and sites the fee covers, and what is billed on top.
What an MSP isThe provider works alongside your own IT staff, taking the monitoring, tooling, out-of-hours cover or projects they have no time for. It depends on a written line between what each team owns.
IT outsourcing modelsProtection, detection and response: endpoint software, email filtering, firewalls and someone watching the alerts. Many providers resell a specialist for monitoring, so ask who actually does the work and who calls you at night.
Cybersecurity basicsThe number your staff call. Ask for the hours, the response time by priority, whether the people answering are the provider's own staff, and what an on-site visit costs.
Questions to ask an MSPLicensing, administration, security settings and migration for cloud platforms. The platform keeps the service running; backing up your data in it and securing the accounts is still somebody's job, so ask whose.

Rules that come with those sectors
Naming a sector is not evidence that a provider meets its rules. These are the ones that commonly apply in the United States, and what to ask about each.
- Financial advisors and CPAs
- Tax and accounting firms fall under the FTC Safeguards Rule, and the IRS expects a written information security plan. Ask how the provider supports yours.
- Healthcare
- A provider with access to patient data is a business associate under HIPAA. Ask for a signed business associate agreement before it touches your systems.
- Manufacturing
- Manufacturers in the defense supply chain are assessed under CMMC. If that is you, ask whether the provider has taken a client through it.
- Legal
- Lawyers have a professional duty to make reasonable efforts to protect client information, under ABA Model Rule 1.6 and its state versions. Ask how client files and email are secured.

Questions to Ask Braintek
Chosen from what this record shows and what it does not. The general list for any provider is in the IT buyer's guide.
- What exactly is included in the monthly fee, and what is billed separately: onboarding, projects, on-site visits?
- What are the response and resolution times by priority, and what happens when they are missed?
- Which certifications and partner tiers does the company hold? We have confirmed none with an issuer yet, so check each one in the issuer's own directory.
- Can you speak to two clients of your size who have been with the company for more than a year? We have not reached any of its clients.
- It names Financial advisors and CPAs, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Construction, Oil and gas, Legal, Nonprofit and Engineering and architecture. If your sector is not among them, ask for a client in it.
- It names co-managed IT. If you have internal staff, ask where the line between the two teams sits, in writing.
- Backup is not among the services it puts first. Ask how your data is backed up, where, and when a restore was last tested.
- Who holds the administrator credentials and the documentation, and how are they handed over if you leave?
