Layer One Networks Overview

Founded1999

Layer One Networks is an IT services company in Corpus Christi. Its about page says it has been located there since 1999. It describes its focus as small and medium-sized businesses, and says it can complete 90% of its work remotely, with services that range "from local to international in scope".

Its backup page names healthcare, legal, and oil and gas firms as the sectors it serves, along with non-profits. The contact page names one person, Jeremy Wilkey, as senior business development manager. The site names no owner or founder.

What Layer One Networks sells

The core offer is managed IT in two plans. Support Care is described as IT management with remote engineers and a 24/7 help desk. Total Care adds what the site calls a multi-layered cybersecurity defense and help qualifying for cyber insurance. The about page promises a dedicated technical account manager.

Around that it lists a managed firewall service with web content filtering, spam filtering, encrypted cloud backup, disaster recovery, IT consulting, on-site support and business VoIP. Its data security page is aimed at companies that must meet PCI and HIPAA rules.

Less usual, it says it hosts client systems in its own datacenters and sells a managed cloud desktop, a Windows desktop reached from a web browser. It states that it does not provide Internet service but can help find a provider through a master agent partnership.

The work it points to

Its backup page carries one testimonial, from an operations manager identified only by a first name and initial, who says Layer One had the company running again within hours after a storm. The about page says its clients "have survived hurricanes with our help". We have not spoken to any of those clients.

How it says it charges

Layer One Networks says its managed service is billed at a per-user cost for all-inclusive IT. It describes its firewall service as fixed-cost security management, and says its cloud desktop includes the licensing needed for the base connection.

The home page promises transparent pricing and no surprise costs. It publishes no prices. It advertises a free 30-minute disaster recovery consultation.

What its site does not tell you

On the 11 pages we read, the site gives no prices, no response times and no contract terms. It describes a certified engineering team without naming a certification, and does not say how many people work there. Its recovery claim of hours, not days, comes without a stated commitment.

Its menu lists a terms of service page we did not read. None of this is unusual for a small provider's website, and all of it is worth asking about before you sign.

What those services mean, and what to ask

Managed ITLayer One Networks lists: Managed IT

Ongoing responsibility for your systems for a recurring fee: monitoring, patching, support and planning. Ask exactly which devices, users and sites the fee covers, and what is billed on top.

What an MSP is
Cloud and Microsoft 365Layer One Networks lists: Cloud desktops

Licensing, administration, security settings and migration for cloud platforms. The platform keeps the service running; backing up your data in it and securing the accounts is still somebody's job, so ask whose.

Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365
Backup and disaster recoveryLayer One Networks lists: Backup and disaster recovery

Copies of your data kept where the original's problems cannot reach, and a plan for bringing systems back. Ask how often a restore is tested and how long a full recovery takes.

Backup and disaster recovery
Help desk and supportLayer One Networks lists: Help desk

The number your staff call. Ask for the hours, the response time by priority, whether the people answering are the provider's own staff, and what an on-site visit costs.

Questions to ask an MSP
VoIP and phone systemsLayer One Networks lists: VoIP

Hosted or on-premises telephony carried over your data network. Voice is the first thing to suffer on a congested link, so ask how calls are prioritized.
