Blue Layer Overview

Founded2002

Blue Layer is a managed IT and security provider with its corporate office in Lubbock. Its site says it was founded in 2002 and names Jeromy Mallory as founder and CEO, Michael Strong as partner and COO, and Chris Powell as chief strategy officer. It also lists phone lines for South and North Texas.

The site says it works with businesses of all sizes and names no particular sectors. Its advisory page says it has supported more than 400 businesses across various industries.

What Blue Layer sells

The site offers managed services in two forms: fully managed, where it supports all of a client's technology, and co-managed, where it supplements an in-house IT team. The scope it lists covers help desk, servers, cloud services, networking, cybersecurity, communications and software licensing.

Its cybersecurity page describes firewalls, endpoint protection, monthly vulnerability scanning, password management and a staffed 24/7/365 security operations center run by partners. It names Arctic Wolf for managed detection and response and KnowBe4 for security awareness training. Cloud work is built on Microsoft Azure, Entra and Intune.

Three lines stand out. It sells advisory services on their own, acting as a client's chief information and technical officers without a managed contract. It runs backup replication with bootable on-premise replicas and cloud copies. And it installs Verkada access control and camera systems.

The work it points to

The site carries a few testimonials credited by name and job title but not by organization. Its home page reports 1858 customer reviews in 2025 and says customers are invited to review every interaction.

The about page cites Inc. 5000 listings for 2020 and 2021 and a place on the "Top 501 Managed Service Providers" list for 2014 through 2025. We have not spoken to any of those clients.

How it says it charges

Blue Layer says fully managed plans carry a standard monthly cost set for each client's environment, which does not change with the number of service calls. It says after-hour and emergency response is included at no extra charge. Software licensing and hardware are billed separately as the client grows or shrinks. It publishes no prices.

What its site does not tell you

On the 12 pages we read, the site does say how big it is: more than 55 advisors, engineers and technicians. It names one company certification, the MSP Cyber Verify program. It gives no response times, contract lengths or exit terms.

Parts of the home page still show template filler text, including a line about ticket turnaround that does not read as the company's own. All of this is worth asking about before you sign.

What those services mean, and what to ask

Managed ITBlue Layer lists: Managed IT

Ongoing responsibility for your systems for a recurring fee: monitoring, patching, support and planning. Ask exactly which devices, users and sites the fee covers, and what is billed on top.

What an MSP is
Co-managed ITBlue Layer lists: Co-managed IT

The provider works alongside your own IT staff, taking the monitoring, tooling, out-of-hours cover or projects they have no time for. It depends on a written line between what each team owns.

IT outsourcing models
CybersecurityBlue Layer lists: Cybersecurity

Protection, detection and response: endpoint software, email filtering, firewalls and someone watching the alerts. Many providers resell a specialist for monitoring, so ask who actually does the work and who calls you at night.

Cybersecurity basics
NetworkingBlue Layer lists: Networking and SD-WAN

Switches, firewalls, Wi-Fi and the internet connection: design, installation and upkeep. Ask who holds the administrator passwords to your own equipment.

Networking basics
Backup and disaster recoveryBlue Layer lists: Disaster recovery

Copies of your data kept where the original's problems cannot reach, and a plan for bringing systems back. Ask how often a restore is tested and how long a full recovery takes.
