AMA TechTel 2 of 5 checks
A Panhandle internet and phone company with managed IT and cybersecurity lines of its own.
AMA TechTel Overview
AMA TechTel is a telecommunications company based in Amarillo that also sells managed IT. Its site says it has served Texans for over 30 years and calls it "one of the largest competitive telecommunications providers in the state". It names no owner or executives. It lists business offices in Amarillo and Lubbock.
The site says its customers are homes, small businesses and enterprise organizations, and names healthcare, education, government and commercial businesses as the sectors that use it. It states a footprint of more than 100,000 square miles, mainly across the Panhandle and Permian Basin.
What AMA TechTel sells
Unlike most companies in this directory, it is an Internet and phone carrier first. The site lists fiber and fixed-wireless Internet for businesses and homes, hosted VoIP or on-premise phone systems, managed IT, cybersecurity, and network management with SD-WAN for multi-site operations.
The managed IT page lists day-to-day user support, monitoring and patching, managed antivirus, cloud backups with periodic test restores, Microsoft 365 administration, and network and managed Wi-Fi support. It says cybersecurity, PCI compliance work and on-site dispatch can be added. The cybersecurity pages add security awareness training with phishing simulations.
It describes itself as a Microsoft Solutions Partner and an AT&T Solutions Provider, and says it also partners with MDS, Metronet and Optimum.
The work it points to
The about page carries six testimonials credited by job title and organization: Harrington Cancer & Health Foundation, KidsInc, Education Credit Union, Sanford & Tatum, Hoarel Sign Company and Texas Ivy Antiques.
The home page adds three more. The site has no case studies. We have not spoken to any of those clients.
How it says it charges
It publishes no prices. The business pages offer a free consultation and quote, and say managed IT costs less than managing everything in-house, without figures. The residential page says prices are locked with taxes included, and advertises a 90-day satisfaction guarantee.
What its site does not tell you
On the 10 pages we read, the site does state response times: it says critical issues get attention within minutes and standard tickets are typically handled the same business day. The cybersecurity page shows a typical response of 1 hr.
It does not say how many people work there, gives no contract terms for business services, and names no certifications beyond the Microsoft and AT&T partner labels. The 90-day guarantee comes without terms. Its about page also says it has built its network for "more than two decades", which sits oddly beside the 30 years claimed elsewhere.
None of that is unusual for a provider's website, and all of it is worth asking about before you sign.

AMA TechTel Services
What those services mean, and what to ask
Ongoing responsibility for your systems for a recurring fee: monitoring, patching, support and planning. Ask exactly which devices, users and sites the fee covers, and what is billed on top.
What an MSP isProtection, detection and response: endpoint software, email filtering, firewalls and someone watching the alerts. Many providers resell a specialist for monitoring, so ask who actually does the work and who calls you at night.
Cybersecurity basicsSwitches, firewalls, Wi-Fi and the internet connection: design, installation and upkeep. Ask who holds the administrator passwords to your own equipment.
Networking basicsLicensing, administration, security settings and migration for cloud platforms. The platform keeps the service running; backing up your data in it and securing the accounts is still somebody's job, so ask whose.
Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365Hosted or on-premises telephony carried over your data network. Voice is the first thing to suffer on a congested link, so ask how calls are prioritized.
