Cultivate IT 2 of 5 checks
Managed IT, managed detection and response, and compliance for Panhandle healthcare and energy firms.
Cultivate IT Overview
Cultivate IT is a managed IT provider located in Amarillo. Its site says it serves clients locally as well as nationally, in industries that include healthcare, engineering, oil & gas, logistics, manufacturing and finance. The site gives no founding year and does not introduce its owner or team. It cites "35+ years of combined experience".
What Cultivate IT sells
The site lists a help desk and managed IT service, cloud migration and storage, backup and disaster recovery, and cybersecurity with what it calls 24/7 advanced threat detection, prevention and response. The managed services page adds Managed Detection and Response, and vulnerability and penetration testing.
On compliance, it says it manages SOC1 and SOC2 compliances, HIPAA and PCI compliance. Its phone service is built on RingCentral and Microsoft Teams. It also offers systems optimization work.
Less usual for an MSP, it sells website development, search engine optimization and website maintenance. The service pages are short, a few paragraphs each.
The work it points to
The home page carries three testimonials with names and companies: John Esler, owner of Pratt Plumbing, Karli Schilling Braughton of C&S Enterprises, and Weston Kingsley, Director of Technology at Burk Royalty. Kingsley says Cultivate helped his company go from 25 employees to 100+ in the span of 18 months. We have not spoken to any of those clients.
How it says it charges
Cultivate IT publishes prices, billed monthly. Its Security Essentials plan is $25 per user and includes Managed Detection & Response and cloud security, with user support billed separately. Its Business plan is $160 per user and includes unlimited business hours user support, device backup, device monitoring, business class email and anti-virus.
The Enterprise plan adds after hours support, a custom SLA and server virtualization, and is priced on request. The pricing page promises no hidden fees.
What its site does not tell you
On the 12 pages we read, the site states no response times, names no certifications, and does not say how many people work there. It does not describe contract length or notice terms. The cloud page cites up to 99.99% uptime without saying whose figure that is.
None of that is unusual for a small provider's website, and all of it is worth asking about before you sign.

Cultivate IT Services
What those services mean, and what to ask
Ongoing responsibility for your systems for a recurring fee: monitoring, patching, support and planning. Ask exactly which devices, users and sites the fee covers, and what is billed on top.
What an MSP isProtection, detection and response: endpoint software, email filtering, firewalls and someone watching the alerts. Many providers resell a specialist for monitoring, so ask who actually does the work and who calls you at night.
Cybersecurity basicsThe number your staff call. Ask for the hours, the response time by priority, whether the people answering are the provider's own staff, and what an on-site visit costs.
Questions to ask an MSPCopies of your data kept where the original's problems cannot reach, and a plan for bringing systems back. Ask how often a restore is tested and how long a full recovery takes.
Backup and disaster recoveryHelp meeting a security standard or a regulator's rules. Ask which frameworks the provider has taken clients through, and what evidence it produces for an auditor.

Rules that come with those sectors
Naming a sector is not evidence that a provider meets its rules. These are the ones that commonly apply in the United States, and what to ask about each.
- Healthcare
- A provider with access to patient data is a business associate under HIPAA. Ask for a signed business associate agreement before it touches your systems.
- Manufacturing
- Manufacturers in the defense supply chain are assessed under CMMC. If that is you, ask whether the provider has taken a client through it.
- Financial services
- Firms covered by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act must keep a written information security program. Ask what the provider contributes to it and what evidence it can give an examiner.
