Lighthouse IT Overview

Founded2017

Lighthouse IT is a managed IT provider that says it is based in Temple, Texas and supports businesses in Austin, Temple and Waco. Its site gives no founding year. It names Ray Wilson as chief executive, Skip Carruth as principal and strategic advisor, and Eli Meier as COO and CTO.

The staff profiles fill in some history. The site says Carruth started JC Technology Group in Temple in 1999, that Wilson joined the team in 2005, and that the managed services business grew from five to forty people between 2006 and 2016. The industries it lists are accounting, legal, insurance, medical practices and construction.

What Lighthouse IT sells

The core product is what the site calls Fully Managed IT Services, with 24/7 support, monitoring and maintenance. Around that it lists IT consulting, project management, technology planning, vendor management, cybersecurity, cloud services, VoIP phone systems, and data backup and disaster recovery.

The cybersecurity page describes layered protection, staff training and incident response planning, and says the company helps clients meet HIPAA and FINRA rules and the demands of cyber insurers. The home page also mentions PCI, NAIC and AICPA compliance.

The backup page says the company archives client data at its own secure data center and can virtualize failed servers to cut downtime "from days to minutes". The cloud page describes a pay-as-you-go model for storage and computing resources.

The work it points to

The client stories page has video testimonials from two named clients, Harrell, Stoebner & Russell, P.C., which the site says has relied on Lighthouse for 20+ years, and David Nix Insurance. Short written reviews follow.

The Waco page quotes an insurance company in Temple, a financial services company in Waco and a service company in Belton, none of them named. We have not spoken to any of those clients.

How it says it charges

Lighthouse IT says it charges a flat monthly or annual rate, with no diagnostic fees, labor fees, additional fees or hidden fees. The home page calls it a fixed monthly fee. It publishes no prices and no contract terms.

What its site does not tell you

On the 10 pages we read, the site states no prices, no response times, no contract length and no certifications. It promises fast responses without a figure. The forty people it mentions is a number from 2016, and the site does not say how many work there now.

None of that is unusual for a small provider's website, and all of it is worth asking about before you sign.

What those services mean, and what to ask

Help desk and supportLighthouse IT lists: IT support

The number your staff call. Ask for the hours, the response time by priority, whether the people answering are the provider's own staff, and what an on-site visit costs.

Questions to ask an MSP
vCIO and IT planningLighthouse IT lists: vCIO

A named person who plans budgets, replacements and projects with you. Ask how often you meet and what the written roadmap contains.

What a vCIO is
CybersecurityLighthouse IT lists: Network security

Protection, detection and response: endpoint software, email filtering, firewalls and someone watching the alerts. Many providers resell a specialist for monitoring, so ask who actually does the work and who calls you at night.

Cybersecurity basics
Backup and disaster recoveryLighthouse IT lists: Backup and disaster recovery

Copies of your data kept where the original's problems cannot reach, and a plan for bringing systems back. Ask how often a restore is tested and how long a full recovery takes.

Backup and disaster recovery
VoIP and phone systemsLighthouse IT lists: VoIP

Hosted or on-premises telephony carried over your data network. Voice is the first thing to suffer on a congested link, so ask how calls are prioritized.

Rules that come with those sectors

Naming a sector is not evidence that a provider meets its rules. These are the ones that commonly apply in the United States, and what to ask about each.

Accounting
Tax and accounting firms fall under the FTC Safeguards Rule, and the IRS expects a written information security plan. Ask how the provider supports yours.
Legal
Lawyers have a professional duty to make reasonable efforts to protect client information, under ABA Model Rule 1.6 and its state versions. Ask how client files and email are secured.
Insurance
Firms covered by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act must keep a written information security program. Ask what the provider contributes to it and what evidence it can give an examiner.
Healthcare
A provider with access to patient data is a business associate under HIPAA. Ask for a signed business associate agreement before it touches your systems.
